Definitions of Important terms

 

Type of Questions Definitions
Explicit –       understanding explicitly stated information and ideas

–       the answer is right there in the text, it is directly stated

Implicit –       understanding implicitly stated information and ideas (Making inferences)

–       requires more thinking and inferring

–       answer is indirectly stated

Making Connections –       responding to reading by making connections between information and ideas in a reading selection and the reader’s personal experience and knowledge

–       interpreting a reading selection by integrating its information and ideas with personal knowledge and experience

–       requires the reader to use his/her own experiences (schema/background knowledge) along wit relevant information from the text

Short Writing Prompts –       developing a main idea with sufficient supporting details

–       organize information and ideas in a coherent manner

Long Writing Prompts –       developing a main idea with sufficient supporting details

–       organizing information and ideas in a coherent manner

–       using conventions (Spelling, grammar, punctuation) in a manner that does not distract from clear communication

–       a variety of written text forms
