Similes and smiles

A simile is a comparison made between two things that are not alike in most ways, but are alike in one important way. In a simile, the words ‘like’ and ‘as’ are used to signal that a comparison is being made between two things. Similes are used to emphasize a certain characteristic of something. The comparison made in a simile is often unusual, but allows the listener or reader to form a mental image of the comparison. Here are some examples and a strategy for dealing with similes.
